CL30.PATRA - Unity Character and Environment Design

CL30.PATRA, is from 3GYPT- a dystopian rendition of Egypt as we normally know of it in 332 BC. CL30.PATRA holds the position of the ruler of 3GYPT. Humans in this era are perceived as far too emotionally weak and vulnerable in effectively making decisions that will benefit the greater good of the people. For this reason, since the dawn of time humanoid robots have been assigned to take on the roles of any and all authoritative positions, such as the police force, ruler, etc.

CL30.PATRA character design and Unity environment is a solo project that was created in my second year of undergraduate studies in Game Design and Development at Niagara College.

Brainstorming and Drafting the Design

What inspired me to develop this type of character was a result of my indecisiveness to create either an Egyptian-style character, or a cyberpunk, futuristic robot. This prompted me to create an original concept that had never been created before, a dystopian Egyptian queen robot. I became highly inspired from illustrations with modern twists on Egyptian pharaohs, renders on unique futuristic robots containing materials made from more than just silver (fabrics, gold, carbon fiber). One of my favourite mechanical videogame characters would include Claptrap from the Borderlands series.

Final Character and Weapon Concept Design

CL30.PATRA is a metallic robot with the general physique of a female human. She is roughly 6 ft. in height, with a small waist, broad hips, broad legs and feet. On her head she wears an Egyptian headdress, with a Starfleet-insignia-shaped pointed cobra crown in the center top. On the side of her headdress resembles a pair of wings, symbolic of her “god-like” status in 3GYPT. Her shoulders wear a protective golden shoulder plate, with a smaller wing design extruding upwards from it. On her chest she wears a protective breastplate complete with intricate patterns and designs, along with an emissive 4NKH necklace resting in the center. Her ribs expose an eye-like shape in the center, as a symbol to the people that they are always being watched over, and that her body will respond to the protective needs of the people based on what her body ‘sees’ is the necessary course of action. Below her ribs resides her small but powerful core, her waist. Her waist acts as a pivot point in her body and is structured from six ball joints to allow for flexibility and 180 degree rotation. She has broad legs that allow for extreme heavy-lifting and jumping power. Her legs are heavily reinforced with protective metal leg pads, with a gap between her thighs to allow for movement flexibility provided by the soft fabric material covering her internal metal springs and rotational components underneath. Her knees, and shoulders and fingers are constructed from metal rods and ball joints to allow for extreme flexibility. On her legs, she has protective knee pads, broad feet, and a short pair of metal wings extruding from the top of her legs. CL30.PATRA looks like a powerful and threatening female pharaoh. Her sharp wings and edges make her appear evil, but are merely symbolic of her power, that she is ‘untouchable’ (hence the sharp edges). She will only commit an act of evil, harming or killing, if anyone poses as a threat to her people.

3D Models

I have 3D modeled, unwrapped, rigged and textured CL30.PATRA in accordance with the concept art that I had created.

Rigging and Animation

The model was skinned and rigged using 3D Max’s CAT system.

Unity Environment

After completing the model of CL30.PATRA, I continued with creating the environment of 3GYPT inside of Unity.
